STAFF PROFILE: CAROLINE

IMG_9904.jpg

This week we wanted to tell you a little more about one of the Vinyl Tap family. Caroline was there when we opened and she has helped to shape Vinyl Tap in more ways than you may realize.

Caroline is co-owner of local record label Cold Lunch Recordings. She is responsible for bringing you great records from bands like Sad Baxter, MIcrowave Mountain, Harpooner, and Penicillin Baby. She and Cold Lunch work tirelessly to promote great events and festivals around town. They are responsible for events like Vinyl Tap’s Record Store Day, Spewfest, Bobfest, and the Eastside Crawfish Boil. If you’ve attended one of their events or listened to one their bands you know how big an influence they have on the local scene. It’s not an easy job to run a small label and is truly a labor of love. I happen to know for a fact that she loves it…most days!

It doesn’t stop there because this fine human is also an amazing photographer and graphic designer. She has designed all the great artwork for Vinyl Tap events over the years and is even responsible for the animated story of Todd. We highly encourage you to check out her portfolio and if you’re in need of some great design work please reach out to her. She has little time on her hands at the moment. carolinebowman.squarespace.com

I really cannot say enough great things about this talented human, but I can tell you that I miss her and hope she is doing well out there! Love ya buddy!

*Here is a little update from the folks at RSD along with the full list. We cannot do pre orders or hold records for customers for RSD titles.

Make an extensive wish list this year!

https://recordstoreday.com/NewsItem/9003

https://recordstoreday.com/CustomPage/1038

This came to us directly from the fine folks who run Record Store Day. We thought we would share it directly with you. Things are a little different this year so let’s find different ways to celebrate. Chin up and carry on!

2020 is different. So what we're doing this year is going to be different too.

Record Store Day is celebrated in countries around the world, and while every country is going through the same issues, they're not all experiencing them at the same time, or in the same way.  In the US, stores have been operating on either no revenue or a fraction of their regular income, and getting ready for one big Day, with a large list of titles to celebrate with is not what they need right now. No one knows what kind of party we'll all be in the mood for, or able to hold safely, at any time this year, in any part of the world. So we're focusing this year not on the party aspect of Record Store Day, but on getting the great releases on the RSD 2020 List into your local record store, and then into your collection.

RSD DROPS! Three street dates when titles from The List will be available only at participating indie record stores. We're working on getting the new version of The List -- with newly assigned RSD Drops dates -- all nice and pretty for you. Look for that on the Record Store Day site on June 1.

On those RSD Drops dates--8/29, 9/26, 10/24--expect stores to have some procedures in place to keep you and their staff safe and comfortable. Stores will be following their local mandates and each one may be doing things a little differently. We'll be working with them on ideas and best practices, and we'll be relaxing some restrictions on online sales if stores choose to do that. As always, it's a good idea to follow your local record store on social media or start a conversation with them. More information will be coming from them as we move towards the first of the RSD Drops.

No plan is going to make everyone happy, and for sure this year looks different than any other, as far as Record Store Day and everything else goes. We're doing the best we can to help record stores, and to help you support them, too.

Steve Earle, Record Store Day , & New West Records

Help support us by pre-ordering a copy of the Ghosts of West Virginia on CD, LP or Limited Edition Indie Only Vinyl (***While supplies last). John & Cariad

cariadandIartopening.jpg

Over the next few weeks we want to introduce the members of the Vinyl Tap staff. You may know them as ‘the bartender’ or ‘the record store clerk’ but you may not know their full story. We have amazingly talented humans that work here and we want to tell a little of their story. Many of the staff work at VT part time in order to pursue their true passions. Now they just have a little more time on their hands to devote to their careers. You should take some time and see what they are up to currently. Up first this week we have John Kesling and his partner Cariad Harmon.

I met John when we were both working at a local restaurant/bar, if you dare to call it that. The place was a weird scene in the front of the house and the back of the house was even worse. The restaurant along with many of the cooks had identity issues that couldn’t be resolved. The building is now for lease.

John was fairly new to town and I was between gigs, so to speak. We hit if off immediately and fell into a comedic rhythm effortlessly. I would say we were on par with the greats like Ren & Stimpy, Barney & Fred, The Macho Man & Randy Savage, Fred & Lamont, and the original two Chippendales. I knew we would work well together.

When I took the job at Vinyl Tap and began hiring, I knew I would be giving John a call. That was a great call to make and he and his partner Cariad have been a part of the VT family ever since.

They do some really great things and we would love for you to support their careers. John is an artist you should get to know now while his work is still affordable. He is and has been prominently featured in local and regional galleries. The more I learn about John the more I find his art truly fascinating on more than an aesthetic level. I see bits of his story wound into the mixed media collages and portraits from a perspective only John can provide. Do yourself a favor and take a look here.

I’ve come to know Cariad through John but also by working with her in other ways through VT. She worked for Belle Meade Bourbon doing marketing so we were able to collaborate on events for VT. It was a joy to work with her and get to know her. Cariad is multi talented and over time I found out how many things she excels in…it’s not cool to be so talented. She is a great singer songwriter which you should check out here.

Along with telling stories in music she excels at telling regular story type stories! Check out the Podcasts she is working on. Her storytelling is exceptional and she has plenty of time to work on more. She is currently recovering from an unfortunate running accident that led to some pretty gnarly x-ray photos. I can’t share those here but maybe you should see what she’s up to and follow along.

This week,

Fresh from the press to your turntable!

Hello World! What is happening everyone? Is there anybody out there? I missed you all last week. Due to an unfortunate lack of follow through on the part of a large internet & phone provider, my home cable wire was cut. MIke, our lovely neighbor who cuts his grass topless, happened across a mysterious black wire lying on top of the ground in his back yard. Our lifeline to the outside world was laying under thirty yards of brush while topless Mike mowed happily along, completely unaware. All in all this boils down to watching one half hour of Ozark on Netflix costs about $15 once you go over your data. A couple of episodes later…you get the picture. Who the hell is ever off WiFi long enough to go over data? Tell us your story. We are here for you.

We have a great list of new releases and reissues this week so please take a look. There is a full archive of past releases in case you missed anything along the way. Please check those out on our VINYL page because chances are we may still have a copy lying around.

Check out all the details below and please get in touch if you have any vinyl inquiries. We can find what you’re after.

Hot Wax 04.17.2020

This week,

Fresh from the press to your turntable!

Hey y’all! How’s everyone doing this week? We hope you are doing very well and staying healthy. Strange times indeed dear friends.

Each week I sit down to write a little something humorous to let you know what’s happening at the bar or the new records that are in stock. The last few weeks it’s been tough to figure out what to write about, but I have to admit that the response from you, our community, while we have been ‘closed’ keeps us all going. For that we want to say ‘Thank You!’ We could not do this without you.

With all the mushy stuff out of the way let’s get down to business this week because we have a few new things happening. First off we have new records in stock this week and you can peep the full list below. You may notice that the new release list is getting a bit shorter every week, and that’s because new records are being held back because of production and supply chain issues. Todd is making sure we are up to date on everything that is coming out currently. DO NOT FEAR because we have a healthy selection in house with thousands of records to select from. Check with Todd to see if what you’re hunting is in stock!

We also have NEW BEER in stock this week and we are currently getting our growler game in check. We will let you know how that goes but we hope to have it up and running very soon. Please make sure to follow our social media with updates on that front.

Store hours are Wednesday thru Sunday from noon until 5 pm for pick up and delivery only. For ways to order check out Discogs page or send along record requests to todd@vinyltapnashville.com. We will verify that what you’re looking for is in stock, and then we will get back to you with the payment details and delivery/pickup information. You can pick up records or Todd will be making deliveries in the 37206 and 37216 zip codes this weekend. He is looking forward to dropping vinyl at your doorstep like a Vinyl milkman.

Along with record delivery, we now have our permit to sell beer to go! That’s right, you can order up a sixer with your new records. Check out the menu on our site for a full list of canned and bottled beer to go. A portion of our beer sales will go directly to our employees who are currently sidelined. If you are looking for another way to help please go to a GoFundMe page set up by our friend Matt.
