Joey Plunkett (Country Westerns)

We are pumped for the aural journey Joey has prepared for you this month. Joey makes up 1/3 of the band Country Westerns and helps make up the heart of what our neighborhood is all about. He is a proprietor of Duke’s and Babo, and you may see him cruising around the hood at a nice steady pace.

One of our more recent chats involved how amazing it is for Country Westerns to release their first LP on Fat Possum very soon. Be on the look out for this record because I’ve taken it for a spin and it’s a great!

Very proud of ya Joe!

You’re a goodfella.

This month's community spotlight: THEI Benefit

We are proud to help sponsor this great event. Please take a few minutes to read more about THEI and visit their website.

This February, the Tennessee Higher Education in Prison Initiative (THEI) will celebrate in Nashville by bringing folks together in the name of a talented and tenacious but too-often ignored population of people: students pursuing college degrees from behind bars.

On Saturday, February 29, THEI will host Winter’s End: A Concert for Change. This event will be a full night of musical entertainment at Little Harpeth Brewing (30 Oldham Street, Nashville). M usical guests will include, among others, Adia Victoria (recently featured in President Obama’s Favorite Songs of 2019), Mercy Bell, Clinchfield, LadyCouch, and special guests. Most importantly, we’ll hear stories from THEI alumni who successfully completed degrees on the inside and are now pursuing their dreams in the free world.

Working with the Tennessee Department of Correction and a number of partner colleges and universities, the mission of THEI mission is to to disrupt systems of harm and create opportunities for autonomy and success by providing college access to people inside Tennessee prisons, preparing students for skillful re-entry, and reducing barriers to continued education and achievement.

With the rise in public interest in prison education and reform, we hope to raise awareness and funding to continue the important work THEI does. An investment in THEI is an investment in the belief that all communities deserve a chance to thrive.

THEI currently enrolls 100 students at three prison facilities--Turney Center Industrial Complex (in partnership with Nashville State Community College), Northwest Correctional Complex (in partnership with Dyersburg State Community College) and Morgan County Correctional Complex (in partnership with Roane State Community College). For more information, contact THEI Executive Director Molly Lasagna at 434.284.1463 or molly@thei.org.
